Recall for oregano because of harmful ingredients

Teuto Markenvertrieb GmbH and Fuchs Foodservice GmbH have started a recall for oregano. According to the companies, a high content of pyrrolizidine alkaloids was found in samples. These substances can lead to poisoning.

Teuto Markenvertrieb GmbH and Fuchs Foodservice GmbH are recalling the product "Oregano rubbed" because of possible contamination with an undesirable plant substance. The spice was offered in various article designs by different retail companies such as Lidl and Edeka. A few weeks ago, Fuchs had recalled grated oregano on the same occasion.

Increased levels of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) were found

According to the companies, increased levels of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) were found in individual samples as part of their own controls.

Customers who have bought the corresponding product can return it to their respective shops without a presentation of the sales receipt, without having to present the receipt.

The product should never be consumed due to health risks

PA are secondary phytonutrients that occur naturally in various plants. They can accidentally get into foods such as herbs through the harvest.

As the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Security (AGES) explains, animal experiments have shown that regular consumption of relatively small amounts (chronic intake) can be carcinogenic.

And the regular intake of higher doses can lead to irreversible liver damage (liver cirrhosis) and, in extreme cases, to death. Children, pregnant women and nursing mothers are at particular risk of health risks.

According to experts, acute cases of poisoning from pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA), which have been ingested in high doses, have been described - in some cases with a fatal outcome.

Symptoms of poisoning include pain in the upper abdomen, abdominal dropsy, nausea and vomiting. Jaundice and fever are also less common. After a few weeks, liver enlargement and hardening is usually noticeable. Acute poisoning can be fatal.

Due to the possible health risk, customers should definitely pay attention to the recall and never consume the product. (ad)
