May contain gluten: organic ice cream is recalled

Dennree GmbH from Töpen (Hof district) has started a recall for ice cream. According to the company, there is a possibility that traces of gluten may be present in the ice. People who are allergic to gluten should definitely not eat them.

Dennree GmbH is recalling the article "Abbot Kinney’s Coconut Milk Ice Chocolate" (500 ml) / "Abbot Kinney’s Coco Frost - cocoa" (500 ml). The recall affects only goods with the best before date (MHD) 17.04.2021 or the batch number L9108. The product is available at denn's organic market and in natural food stores.

Do not consume ice cream

"Contamination with raw materials may result in traces of gluten," the company wrote in a message that the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety published on its portal "lebensmittelwarnung.de".

There is no warning on the packaging. Dennree GmbH points out that people who are allergic to gluten should definitely not consume the ice cream. The consumption is harmless for people without gluten intolerance.

Customers who have bought the organic ice cream are asked not to eat it, but to bring it back to the point of sale where they bought it. The purchase amount will be refunded without proof of receipt when the product is presented.

Symptoms primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract

According to experts, about one percent of the German population suffers from gluten intolerance (celiac disease). Therapy is not yet available. Only strict abstinence from gluten can help.

As explained on the public health portal of Austria "Gesundheit.gv.at", typical physical symptoms of intolerance to gluten primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract. There are complaints such as diarrhea, constipation, gas, abdominal cramps or bleeding in the intestine.

"Various other symptoms of gluten intolerance arise from subsequent general malnutrition with the resultant protein and vitamin deficiency. This includes general malaise with tiredness, nervousness or headache or weight loss, ”says the portal.

And: "In (small) children, celiac disease manifests itself in diarrhea, bloated stomach and failure to thrive". (ad)
