Bronchitis is not just a simple cough, it is mostly due to a viral upper respiratory infection that has spread downwards. A cold may have been dragged away, which could lead to bronchitis (inflammation of the bronchi). A bacterial infection can later join the initially viral infection. Prescription drugs are not always necessary. Home remedies for bronchitis liquefy the mucus, make it easier to cough up and reduce rattling cough, strengthen the immune system and improve the general condition. They can also accelerate healing together with conventional medical therapy.

If a cough does not improve after a week and / or if general symptoms such as exhaustion, fever, headache and body ache are added, it is advisable to go to the doctor. A longer, general feeling of illness should also be examined in more detail. In the case of coughing up blood, a doctor must be consulted immediately.

Different breast wraps

Breast wraps are simple home remedies for bronchitis. They are easy to use and promote expectoration, soothing cough and anti-inflammatory. All wraps should be done lying down, at rest, possibly covered.

Breast wrap with curd cheese

A chest wrap with curd helps with tight cough and cough. Quark is applied in the middle from one end to the other on a cotton cloth, then the cloth is wrapped in from both sides. So that the whole thing is not too cold, the wrap is warmed up for a few minutes on the heater or a hot water bottle. Then the chest wrap is placed around the upper body so that the spine is free. There is another scarf on top and the last one is a wool scarf. A hot water bottle or a warmed spelled or cherry stone pillow is placed on the ribs on the left and right. The wrap can remain with adults as long as it is perceived as pleasant.

Breast wrap with hot lemon juice

This home remedy for bronchitis is only suitable for sufferers who have intact, insensitive skin. The wrap helps with a tight cough. For this, the juice of a lemon is mixed with half a liter of hot water. A cloth soaked with it then serves as a breast wrap. But be careful - the heat should be pleasant. Another comes over the cotton cloth and finally a wool scarf. In case of itching or discomfort, the wrap should be removed immediately. Otherwise it can be worn for a maximum of one hour. The skin is then best treated with a nourishing cream.

Breast wrap with potatoes

Potatoes keep the heat for a very long time. Caution should be exercised when applying. Four to six potatoes are boiled in a bowl and then wrapped in a kitchen towel and crushed with a fist or a rolling pin. Put the potato paste on a cotton cloth, tap the ends and the potato wrap is ready. This is still fixed with a woolen cloth. The wrap can stay as long as it is comfortable, preferably overnight.

Breast wrap with beeswax

Finished packs with a beeswax pad and a piece of raw wool are available in every pharmacy. The beeswax has an anti-irritant, expectorant effect and also exudes a very pleasant smell. This pad is warmed up with a hair dryer and then applied to the skin. The raw wool comes over it. The whole is fixed with a silk or wool scarf. The wrap stays there as long as it is desired.

Breast wrap with thyme tea

If bronchitis is accompanied by a convulsive cough, the breast wrap, soaked with thyme tea, helps. For this, a tea is made from two teaspoons of thyme herb and half a liter of boiling water, which should take between five and ten minutes. This is used to soak a cotton cloth and, when it is not so hot, put it around the chest. Another cotton cloth and a wool scarf come over it. As soon as the wrap is cold, it is removed.

Breast wrap with onions

Onions are often not so popular for wraps due to their smell, but they are really worth trying. Because onions are able to pull the inflammation out of the body. Here's how it works: Chop two onions, heat them over the steam, wrap them in a cloth and then lay them on your chest, cover them with another cloth and keep warm with a woolen cloth. The wrap can stay there for at least an hour.

Breast wraps with lavender oil

Lavender oil not only smells good, but also helps cough up and has an antispasmodic effect. A 10% lavender oil from the pharmacy is best used for the wrap. The inner cloth is soaked in the warm lavender oil and used as a pad. Put some warm raw wool or cotton wool over it and then a wool scarf. The wrap can remain for a few hours.

Thyme essence

Thyme is not only a great herb for coughs and respiratory diseases. The thyme contains over 200 varieties, with the real thyme being the most used in this country. Thyme ensures that the unpleasant mucus is easier to cough up. Thyme is also a good tea for loosening mucus.

Recipe for thyme tincture
  • Put herbs in a jar with screw cap, leave some space
  • Add 150ml of high-proof alcohol to the herbs, cover them
  • Leave in a warm place for 4 to 6 weeks, shake occasionally
  • Put the tincture through a coffee filter and pour into a dark bottle
  • Take 20 drops several times a day, drink enough
  • Tincture stays in a cool place for years
  • Non-alcoholic variant: replace alcohol with apple cider vinegar

Cough syrup - homemade

Onion juice is a home remedy that our grandmothers used for coughing and bronchitis. For the onion juice, an onion (medicinal plant of the year 2015) is finely chopped and mixed with two tablespoons of honey. This mixture remains at room temperature for a few hours. Then the cough syrup is ready. If you don't have that long, cook the chopped onion in 125 milliliters of water for about ten minutes. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, the juice can be taken up to once an hour - one teaspoon full. Warning: only cough suppressants may also be administered in the evening before sleep, expectorant cough syrup is only something for the day. Inhale

To loosen the mucus and make it easier to cough up, it is advisable to inhale twice a day. This is best done with sea salt or Himalayan salt, which is inexpensive but still effective. A 0.9% saline solution is recommended. This means that nine grams of salt are added per liter of water. The head is bent over a bowl filled with hot salt water and covered with a towel. Then inhale the steam for about ten minutes. The salt-water solution moisturizes the airways and the salt binds toxins, which can then be coughed up.

Tea recipes

Herbal teas were among the common home remedies for bronchitis. However, the right mix should be made. The following recipes are intended for the acute phase of the disease and can be refined with a little honey if desired.

Tea recipe 1: Against the urge to cough

Topped fennel fruits, lungwort, ribwort leaves and coltsfoot leaves are mixed in equal parts. For a large cup of tea (250 ml), a teaspoon of the mixture is brewed with boiling water. The tea is ready after twenty minutes.

Tea recipe 2: expectorant and antitussive

The tea consists of 20 grams of marshmallow root, 40 grams of Icelandic moss and 40 grams of licorice root (medicinal plant 2014). Two teaspoons are brewed with a quarter liter of boiling water. The drawing time here is ten minutes.

Tea recipe 3: for dry cough

Ten grams of toasted aniseed fruits, 20 grams of coltsfoot leaves, 20 grams of Icelandic moss and ten grams of licorice root are mixed together. For a cup of tea, pour a teaspoonful of approximately 250 milliliters of boiling water and strain after ten minutes.

Nutrition

To liquefy the mucus, it is important to drink enough. Still water and herbal tea are the right drinks for bronchitis. Since dairy products can aggravate mucilage, this must be reduced, but above all, pure milk should be completely deleted from the menu. In the case of a respiratory illness, light food is also recommended. This includes fruit, steamed vegetables and soups. Those who like to eat spicy can enrich the soup with a piece of ginger (medicinal plant of the year 2018). Ginger warms up, has an anti-inflammatory effect and strengthens the immune system. The anti-inflammatory substance allicin, which is contained in garlic, can also be helpful. If you don't want to eat the garlic raw, you can use it to refine a vegetable soup. However, to have an effect, at least two toes should be used daily. There are also many other home remedies that solve the cough mucus.

Healing quince soup

One of our grandmothers' home remedies that they used for bronchitis is quince soup. In addition to vitamin C and zinc, quinces also contain a large amount of mucilaginous substances that protect the upper respiratory tract. The following ingredients are required for this healing soup:

300 grams of quince, a teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice, a carrot, a tablespoon of olive oil, 40 grams of spring onions, three teaspoons of cane sugar, a little salt and pepper. The quinces are washed, quartered, their cores removed and drizzled with the lemon juice. The oil is heated in the pot, the spring onions are cut into fine rings and steamed in the oil. Add to that the sugar and the carrot cut into pieces. After about five minutes, a liter of water and a little salt and pepper are added. The quince soup should then simmer for about half an hour before being mashed and then served. Good Appetite!

Strengthen the immune system

If you repeatedly suffer from an increased susceptibility to infection, the entire immune system should be strengthened sustainably. In the first place are sufficient sunlight (supplement with vitamin D in winter!) And exercise. Natural sunlight increases the activity of the T lymphocytes, which are used to fight infections. A good social environment with as little stress as possible is also very important. Adequate sleep is also necessary and vitamin C is also an important element to strengthen the immune system.

In addition to taking a cold shower at the end of the shower, frequent sauna sessions and adequate ventilation in our living rooms also help. Only with frequent ventilation can we keep the concentration of fungi and bacteria in damp living rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms low. Removable footbaths are also good for increasing the body's defenses. Of course, a healthy and varied diet with as many vegetables as possible should not be neglected.

Garlic, ginger, turmeric and onions in particular help the body form important substances to fight pathogens. Herbs such as rosemary, sage and thyme can also be used as radical scavengers in the body. Secondary plant substances as antioxidants are particularly valuable. Wild herbs, nuts and vegetables contain a particularly large number of such substances. You can strengthen the immune system.

Bristly taiga root

Only when the above steps for a stronger immune system have been carried out can we further strengthen the immune response of our body with the help of some special medicinal plants. The Taiga root (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is also known as Siberian ginseng. The contained eleutherosides and saponins pleasantly stimulate the body's immune system. It is an adaptogenic medicinal plant. The taiga root can be processed into tea in dried root form, it is also commercially available as an extract and in ground pill form. The taiga root can be taken over three months, after which it is recommended to take a break of four weeks after which the intake can be continued.

Coneflower

The real coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) can be drunk as a tea blend or taken as an essence. It plays an important role in Indian medicine. The echinacosides contained have an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. The medicinal plant's immunomodulatory effect only occurs when the Echinacea is used frequently. Likewise, aconite, thuja and mistletoe are valuable herbal immune modulators with which the immune system is strengthened with frequent use.

Horseradish

The well-known horseradish also helps against bronchitis. The essential oils it contains
loosen the mucus in the bronchi, making it easier to cough up. They are also anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. The root can be consumed as homemade cough syrup or fresh as a side dish. For the cough syrup, mix with equal proportions of pressed garlic and chopped onion. Mix this mixture with the same amount of honey and slowly bring to the boil with a little water. Take a tablespoon of the juice several times a day as needed, this will quench the acute cough.

Adequate sleep

It sounds simple, and yet it is a common problem. Especially when we are sick, our body needs more rest to repair the damaged immune system at night. A person suffering from bronchitis should sleep significantly more than in a healthy condition. An afternoon nap is particularly recommended.

General tips

So that the airways are not too dry, a humid indoor climate is necessary. This is where damp cloths help, which are hung up in the apartment and constantly renewed. Flat bowls with the largest possible evaporation surface (e.g. flower coasters, casserole dishes) can also be placed on the radiators to increase the humidity. A high level of humidity in the bedroom is very important, as this is the only way the cilia in the nose can filter pathogens from the air. If our airways are too dry, the mucous membranes become susceptible to pathogens. Apart from the fact that smoking is generally very unhealthy, it is absolutely advisable to refrain from respiratory diseases. The smoke places an additional burden on the body, and healing is delayed.

It is also pleasant to place an aroma lamp with a little eucalyptus, thyme and / or tea tree oil from time to time. Eucalyptus and thyme make coughing easier, with tea tree oil cleaning the air from pathogens. A drop of each oil is sufficient for a mixture. Attention should be paid to the quality of the essential oils. However, an aroma lamp should not burn constantly. After two hours, our olfactory organ needs a break. Attention, eucalyptus oil must not be used in children.

In the case of severe complaints, fever, shortness of breath or if the general condition is poor, medical help should be urgently sought, because acute bronchitis can develop into a chronic form and there is also a risk of pneumonia. (sw, dp)
