Warning: further Xarelto counterfeits have been discovered
Just a few days ago, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) had pointed out counterfeits of the Xarelto drug from the original manufacturer Bayer. Now more fake batches of the anticoagulant have appeared.
More fake batches discovered
At the beginning of June, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) referred to counterfeits of the drug Xarelto® 20 mg (active ingredient rivaroxaban) from the original manufacturer Bayer AG in Polish-Slovakian presentation, which were discovered in the UK by a parallel distributor. Now two more fake batches of the anticoagulant have appeared.
How to recognize the counterfeits
On its website, the BfArM refers to two further confirmed, fake batches of the drug Xarelto® 20 mg from the original manufacturer Bayer AG in Polish-Slovakian design, which were discovered in the UK by a parallel distributor.
According to the information, the two other fake batches are also in Polish-Slovak design and bear the real batch numbers BXHUBD2 and BXHXL41 and the expiry date 09/2020.
The experts explain how to identify the counterfeits:
The perforation lines are clearly visible on the original product, but the two perforation lines are not recognizable on the counterfeit batches BXHVHC3 and BXHXL41. And with the counterfeit batch BXHUBD2, the perforation line is weak.
In addition, all three fake batches BXHVHC3, BXHXL41 and BXHUBD2 can be recognized by the following feature:
- The Bayer logos for the counterfeit batches are printed on the top of the blister and are always recognizable from all angles.
- The Bayer logo is embossed on the original product and only weakly recognizable in the scattered light (oblique).
Investigations not yet completed
The BfArM advises parallel distributors, wholesalers, pharmacists and users to check medicinal products from the above-mentioned batches and to report suspected cases to the BfArM.
According to the information, the investigations in this case have not yet been completed. The origin of the counterfeit is currently being investigated.
The BfArM is in close contact with the state authorities responsible for monitoring medicines in Germany and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
As soon as further information is available, the BfArM will inform you immediately.
Medications protect against the formation of blood clots
The drug Xarelto® is a so-called anticoagulant.
“Anticoagulant drugs ensure that certain components of the blood do not stick together so easily. They therefore protect against the formation of blood clots, ”explains the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWIG) on the portal“ gesundheitsinformation.de ”.
"Colloquially they are often called" blood thinners ". Since they do not make the blood more fluid, this designation is strictly speaking not exactly correct, ”said the experts.
Such drugs “are used to lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases caused by blood clots. This includes heart attacks, strokes and venous thrombosis, ”explains the IQWIG.
Taking the medicine can also have undesirable side effects. The most common of these are bleeding, some of which go unnoticed.
According to experts, they can also promote thrombosis in some patients. (ad)
