Warn consumer advocates: Wash hands after peeling bananas
Most Germans love bananas. The sweet fruits are not only very tasty, but also extremely healthy. However, do not forget to wash your hands after peeling bananas. Consumer advocates point this out.
One of the most popular types of fruit
Bananas are among the most popular types of fruit in Germany. The tasty fruits are very healthy thanks to the vitamins and minerals they contain, but they may also be harmful to your health if you do not wash your hands thoroughly after peeling.
Full of healthy nutrients
Bananas are often used for a quick boost of energy in between.
The healthy fruits are rich in potassium and magnesium as well as vitamin B6. It also contains other minerals, vitamins and trace elements.
As a scientific study has shown, bananas can even protect against cardiovascular diseases due to their healthy ingredients.
Since the fruit is generally easy to digest (this applies particularly to ripe fruit), it is recommended not only as baby food, but also for intestinal complaints.
Curiously, bananas are used both for diarrhea and as a home remedy for constipation.
In the latter case, however, more ripe fruit must be used because unripe bananas contain a lot of starch that is difficult to digest.
Children should only get peeled bananas in their hands
Bananas are mostly produced in huge monocultures using pesticides. This does not only harm the environment and the plantation workers.
"In studies, residues of these crop protection products are repeatedly found on and in the bowl," explains Sabine Hülsmann, nutrition expert at the Bavarian Consumer Center in a message.
According to the expert, there are few or no pesticides under the shell. Bananas are also treated after harvesting.
For example, the use of anti-mold agents, so-called fungicides, prevents the fruit from decaying early during transport. Fruit from conventional cultivation is particularly affected.
“With conventional goods, it is advisable to wash your hands after peeling. Children should only be given peeled fruit to their hands, ”says Hülsmann.
Organically grown bananas are less or not at all contaminated. Those who choose organic and fairly traded fruits also make an important contribution to better working conditions for local workers and sustainable use of the environment. (ad)
